Cops: Armed man abandons robbery attempt in Island Park

A man threatened to use his handgun during an attempted robbery Friday at an Island Park bank, police said, but then abruptly left the bank without taking any money.

A female employee of the Bank of America branch, 147 Long Beach Rd., was handed a note that demanded money from a man who was carrying a gun in a holster on his right hip, Nassau police said.

But before the bank employee reacted, the man grabbed the note and quickly left the bank with no proceeds, police said.

None of the eight people in the bank was hurt, police said.

The man was described as 40- to 45-years old, 5 foot 10, thin build, and wearing a long sleeve white shirt with a yellow square patch on the left breast pocket and a white and blue patch on the left shoulder, police said.

He also was wearing black pants, a black baseball cap with white and red letters, and dark sunglasses, police said.
