Cops: Arrest in Westbury shooting

Detectives from the Nassau police Third Squad tracked down and arrested a suspect within 24 hours of a shooting that took place early Sunday in Westbury, police said.

In the 12:40 a.m. shooting on Cross Street near Union Avenue, Jose Martinez, 20, fired a shot at a group of men and the bullet struck one victim, 22, in the right leg, Nassau police said in a Monday news release.

Martinez ran away but detectives found and arrested him at 11:55 p.m. Sunday at his 268 Sheridan St., New Cassel, home, police said.

Charged with first-degree assault and five counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, Martinez faced arraignment Monday at First District Court, Hempstead.

The victim was admitted to a hospital for treatment of his wound.
