Cops: At least 1 hurt in Hempstead apartment fire
A Hempstead apartment complex fire Sunday night left at least one person hospitalized for smoke inhalation, Hempstead police said.
Authorities including Hempstead Fire Department firefighters and Hempstead police officers responded to the fire at 100 Terrace Ave. about 10:30 p.m., police said.
As of 11:50 p.m., the blaze had been contained to one apartment in the six-story complex, police said.
Police said the injuries sustained did not immediately appear to be serious. It was likely that more than one person was hurt, however, because more than one ambulance had been called to the scene, police said.
A Hempstead fire department representative, reached by phone, declined to comment.
The complex has a history of fire trouble. A December 2009 blaze at the address left 12 injured and a May 2011 fire there hurt two women.
Police Sunday night did not immediately know the cause of the latest fire.
