Troopers stopped Carmelo Starrantino, 53, in a black Mercedes-Benz at about 1:10 a.m. after he was speeding and driving on the shoulder of the roadway, north of the Northern State Parkway, according to a news release.

As troopers interviewed Starrantino they detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage, the release said.

He is charged with driving while intoxicated and traffic violations and is due in First District Court in Hempstead on April 20.
