A woman who was discovered floating in a canal in Oceanside early Wednesday died of an apparent suicide, Nassau police said.

"The body has been removed to the medical examiner's office, but all indications are right now it's an apparent suicide," a Nassau police spokesman said.

Police said the woman, whose body was found about 6:30 a.m., was 60 years old and an Oceanside resident. But a positive identification has not yet been made.

It was not clear how long the woman had been in the water or whether her death was related to superstorm Sandy, which caused extensive damage in Oceanside.
