While burglarizing a home in his own neighborhood Friday, a Westbury man also struck one of the occupants -- an 8-year-old girl -- with a mop, Nassau County police said.

Police said the girl was sleeping when suspect Matthew Levine, 22, of 36 Forest Lane, hit her several times with the mop, police said.

Levine allegedly broke into the Foster Lane home sometime before 1 a.m., and one of the residents, a woman, 34, told police she heard a noise.

The woman went downstairs, where she discovered the suspect, police said. When she ran to a neighbor's house to call police, the suspect went upstairs to assault the girl, police said.

Third Precinct police arrived and arrested Levine in the home; the suspect also had taken the woman's cellphone, police said.

The child had a "minor head injury but refused medical attention at the scene," police said in a news release.

Levine is charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.

At arraignment Friday, a temporary order of protection against him was issued for the girl, and Levine was held in jail on a bail of $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond, according to online court records.

He is scheduled to go back to court Tuesday.
