Police are investigating an attempted armed robbery in Freeport late Tuesday night, a robbery they said was thwarted when the victim, a taxi driver, sped from the scene.

The attempted robbery occurred on Prince Street at about 11:15 p.m., Nassau County police said.

Police said the taxi driver, who was waiting for a fare, was approached by two men, one of whom stuck his hand inside the cab with a gun -- and demanded money.

But instead of handing over cash, police said the driver hit the gas pedal -- and drove off. The would-be robbers then fled south on foot through the lot of buildings on North Main Street, police said.

No one was injured.

Police said the first man was in his early 20s, about 6-foot tall, slim, and was wearing a light-colored gray hooded sweatshirt with dark jeans. The second man was wearing a brown sweatshirt, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the attempted robbery to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
