A taxi driver was assaulted and robbed Tuesday night while waiting to pick up a fare in New Cassel, Nassau police said.

Police said a Centro taxi was called to pick up a customer in front of a home on Catherine Street. The 43-year-old female driver waited a few minutes, and at about 11:45 p.m. two men entered the cab -- one in the front passenger seat and one in the rear seat behind the driver.

The rear passenger grabbed the driver around the throat in a chokehold while the front passenger went through her pockets. The two suspects then fled on foot south on Catherine Street with an unknown amount of cash, police said. No one was injured in the robbery.

Police said the suspects were both described as being tall, slim and in their early 20s.

Detectives ask anyone with information on this robbery to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
