A Brooklyn man arrested in Garden City Wednesday on drunken driving charges was additionally charged with assaulting a police officer trying to search him a few hours later, Nassau police said.

Ricardo Ryan, 25, of 2181 Bedford Ave., was arrested by Garden City police in the vicinity of Franklin and Stewart avenues on charges of DWI and other vehicle and traffic law violations about 4:30 a.m., police said.

After Ryan was taken to the Nassau County police headquarters in Mineola, about 8:40 a.m., police said, he refused to allow an officer to conduct a routine search of him before placing him in a holding cell.

Ryan became violent and combative, police said, and the officer suffered a knee injury.

The officer, who was not identified by name, was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released, police said.

Ryan was to be arraigned Thursday in First District Court, Hempstead.
