A Plainview man was arrested and charged with drunken driving after an early-morning accident Thursday on the Southern State Parkway in Nassau, state police said.

Carlos Merlos, 21, was arrested after being interviewed by a trooper investigating his one-car accident, police said.

The accident occurred near eastbound Exit 21, Nassau Road, in Roosevelt at 1:05 a.m.

Police said the trooper "detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage" as he interviewed Merlos and said the driver had "slurred speech, impaired motor coordination, and bloodshot watery eyes."

Police said Merlos failed a field sobriety test, as well.

Arraignment details were not immediately available.
