A driver was killed when he swerved to avoid debris on an East Hills street Sunday night and collided with an oncoming car, police said.

Norman M. Hecht, 63, of Roslyn, was pronounced dead at Winthrop-University Hospital nearly two hours after the 7:55 p.m. crash on Locust Lane, Nassau County police said in a Monday news release.

Hecht was heading north in his 2012 Honda when he tried to avoid the debris in the road and struck a southbound 2013 BMW driven by an unidentified 41-year-old woman, police said.

Hecht was taken by Nassau County police ambulance to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:39 p.m., police said. The other driver was treated for unspecified injuries at an undisclosed hospital and released.

"Detectives report no apparent criminality with the accident at this time," police said in the news release. "Both vehicles were impounded for a safety inspection."
