A Queens man tried to evade troopers Sunday on the Northern State Parkway in Lake Success by driving up to 100 mph, and after he finally stopped his Volkswagen in heavy traffic he told troopers he didn't pull over immediately because he wanted to avoid getting a traffic ticket, police said.

Solomon Kulangiyev, 22, of Rego Park, faces charges of reckless driving, fleeing a police officer and traffic violations after a chase of about 11/2 miles, State Police said in a Tuesday news release.

Kulangiyev was in a gray Volkswagen at about 10:15 p.m., driving about 95 mph in a 55 mph zone, the release said. Kulangiyev was driving east on the parkway, near Lakeview Road.

The trooper turned on his emergency lights and attempted to stop the Volkswagen, but Kulangiyev sped off before stopping in traffic near New Hyde Park Road, police said.

When he was arrested, Kulangiyev said his motive for driving off was avoiding a ticket, the release said.

His arraignment in First District Court in Nassau County was not immediately available.
