A Lynbrook man was driving drunk when he left the scene of an accident on the Southern State Parkway Thursday morning in Valley Stream, State Police said.

Anthony Avella, 41, of 29 Lawrence Ave., hit another car from behind near Exit 16, Corona Avenue, at about 6:24 a.m. and then fled from the scene, according to a report.

When troopers arrived at the scene of the accident, the driver of the other car told them the other driver had fled, police said. Troopers pulled over Avella a few miles away, on Dutch Broadway in Valley Stream, police said.

Avella had bloodshot, watery eyes, troopers said, and failed sobriety tests. He was arrested at the scene.

He is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, driving while intoxicated, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and several traffic violations.

State police did not release information on the injuries of the other driver.

Avella is scheduled to return to First District Court in Hempstead on Dec. 29.
