Cops: Drunken driver hits police car on Southern State
State police arrested a Queens man on drunken driving charges after he crashed into a parked police car on the Southern State Parkway early Saturday morning, police said.
Police charged Carlos Cardenas Romero, 38, of Long Island City with driving while intoxicated, unsafe lane change and colliding with an emergency vehicle.
State police said they had responded to a single vehicle crash east of Exit 20 in Roosevelt that was disrupting traffic on the parkway after midnight. Nassau County police had closed a lane with a parked police car with lights flashing to assist and divert eastbound traffic.
About 1:30 a.m., state police said Romero's Nissan Altima hit the parked police car, damaging it but causing no injuries. A roadside test showed Romero was intoxicated and he was arrested and taken to Nassau County jail, police said. He was scheduled to be arraigned Saturday.
