Cops: Drunken driver reading text crashes
A Hicksville woman was driving drunk and reading a text message when she lost control of her car in Plainedge Thursday, ending up in the woods off the shoulder of the Bethpage State Parkway, State Police said.
Laura McMorrough, 30, was driving south on the parkway at about 2:40 a.m. when she lost control of her gray Toyota Camry and came to a stop in the woods, troopers said in a report.
Troopers said McMorrough also had "watery, droopy, bloodshot eyes and slow coordination."
She failed sobriety tests and was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, police said. She also was charged with several traffic violations.
McMorrough also "admitted to reading a text message on her cellphone when she lost control," of her car, according to a news release.
She is scheduled to appear in First District Court in Hempstead on Feb. 27.
