An Amityville man pulled over for speeding and driving erratically Thursday on the Southern State Parkway in North Amityville faces a drunken driving charge, State Police said.

Troopers noticed Fisher Smith, 65, driving a black Nissan Pathfinder at 85 mph, tailgating other motorists and changing lanes without signaling near Exit 32, Route 110, at about 11 p.m., according to a new release.

Police stopped the Nissan near County Line Road after Smith "nearly struck several vehicles," the release said.

As he was being interviewed, Smith was detected to have a strong odor of alcoholic beverage, police said. He failed sobriety tests and was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

In addition to DWI, Smith was also charged with reckless driving and several traffic violations. He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Central Islip.
