Cops: DWI for driver who struck car, fled
He was driving at a "high rate of speed," struck a car and didn't stop, police said.
When state police stopped Julio Jimenez on the Northern State Parkway entrance ramp from the Meadowbrook Parkway Saturday morning the trooper said he had "bloodshot, watery eyes" and failed a sobriety test.
Police said Jimenez, 24, of Peters Boulevard in Bay Shore, produced a "positive breath sample" of .08 blood-alcohol content -- the legal limit in New York.
He was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and traffic violations, police said.
The stop occurred at 9:01 a.m., police said. That was just after the trooper said he saw Jimenez, in a maroon Dodge Caravan, speeding eastbound on the Northern State when he made an unsafe lane change and struck a Honda Civic.
"The Dodge continued in the left lane and did not make an attempt to slow down or pull over after the accident," state police said in a narrative.
The trooper made the stop near Post Avenue.
Jimenez is scheduled for arraignment in First District Court in Hempstead at a later date, police said.
