Nassau County homicide detectives arrested a California man Saturday night on charges in the shooting of his estranged wife's boyfriend Friday morning in Valley Stream.

Police said they arrested Deon Ewers, 50, of Los Angeles on murder charges in the killing of a 34-year-old man shortly before 7 a.m. Friday in a Valley Stream house. Ewers wife and 14-year-old son were inside the rental home at 26 E. Hawthorne Ave. at the time of the shooting, but were not hurt, police said.

Homicide detectives arrested Ewers on Saturday in Oceanside. He was charged with second-degree murder and was set to be arraigned Sunday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said Ewers shot the man with multiple rounds from a semiautomatic handgun.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, where he died, according to authorities.

Police said the couple separated last year after about 13 years of marriage. Ewers flew to Long Island on Thursday night, hours before the shooting, police said. Authorities said he had no prior criminal record.
