At 2:20 p.m., a 2000 Komatsu PC300LC excavator was parked in the locked area of the Nassau County basin, police said, when the cab of the excavator became engulfed. Police identified the basin as #54, located off Ballpark Lane.

Police estimated the value of the damage at about $10,000, and said it could not be operated.

The Hicksville Fire Department responded to the scene, bringing three trucks and 15 fire fighters, police said. The arson bomb squad and fire marshal are investigating, police said.
