A maid fired from her job in Great Neck kidnapped the family's 5-month-old daughter Wednesday and fled to a train station before Nassau police officers arrested her after a brief struggle and brought the infant home unharmed, authorities said.
Gloria Suarez, 55, who was living at the home of her former employer on Allenwood Road, was arrested and charged with second-degree kidnapping, resisting arrest, endangering the welfare of a minor and obstructing government administration.
Police said the family hired Suarez as a housekeeper three months ago and fired her recently because of poor performance. The family was allowing Suarez to live there temporarily, police said.
Suarez left the home with the baby at about 10:20 a.m., police said, and the child's father became suspicious because Suarez failed to take the child's stroller.
Police went to a local park where witnesses said Suarez was there with the child but left in a taxicab, officials said. Officers found her holding the baby at the Roslyn railroad station at about 12:15 p.m.
Suarez refused to give up the infant, police said, but was subdued by officers. She was to be arraigned Thursday in Hempstead.
