Cops: Five charged in car break-ins

Police officers responding to a call about a suspicious car in Herricks early Thursday arrested five people -- four of them teenagers -- and charged them with breaking into parked cars.

The arrests were made at 4:10 a.m. near the corner of Emmett Street and South Street.

Arrested were Abdoul Seweid, 17, of 14 Paul Ave., North New Hyde Park; Christopher Doherty, 20, of 7323 210th St., in Bayside; and Erik Campos, 16, of 1315 125th St., College Point -- as well as two 15-year-olds, whose identities were not released by police.

All five were charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, petit larceny and fifth-degree conspiracy, though the two 15-year-olds were charged as juveniles, not as adults.

In addition, Seweid also was charged with third-degree falsely reporting an incident and with falsifying a written statement to police officers, police said.

Police said that when the responding officers interviewed the suspects Seweid told them that Doherty had been "assaulted by three unknown males."

An investigation found that not to be true, police said.

All three of the adults arrested were scheduled for arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.

The two juveniles were released to their parents early Thursday and will appear in Family Court on Oct. 3.
