Cops: Fleeing man, 19, armed with handgun, shot by Hempstead police

A Hempstead Police Department officer shot a Hempstead man who was reaching for a gun while fleeing, authorities said Monday.

Plainclothes officers were patrolling Martin Luther King Drive in Hempstead Village about 11:20 p.m. Sunday when they noticed an illegally parked vehicle, police said.

As officers got out of their patrol vehicle to investigate, Jarette Anderson, 19, ran from the scene, officials said.

The officers, who were not identified, chased the suspect and noticed that Anderson had reached into his waistband for a gun, police said. The officers warned the suspect to put down the weapon, but when he turned toward police, an officer fired one round, police said. The bullet struck Anderson in the neck and arm, authorities said.

After Anderson was arrested, authorities found a .22-caliber revolver on the suspect along with what appeared to be crack, police said.

Anderson was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for his gunshot wound. He was listed in stable condition Monday afternoon, police said.

Anderson is charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second- and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, menacing a police officer and resisting arrest, police said. He will be arraigned once he is released from the hospital.
