A Freeport man fleeing police in Uniondale on Thursday morning tried to dispose of a revolver and other items he was carrying, Nassau police said, but he was arrested a few hours later and the weapon was recovered.

Juan Moronta, 25, of 145 Randall Ave., was charged with second degree possession of a weapon.

In response to a 911 call that said there was a suspicious person on Compass Street, police said they approached Moronta there at 7:10 a.m. and asked to see identification.

Moronta fled on foot through rear yards, and disposed of his jacket, a black bag, a ski mask and the revolver, in a garbage can, police said.

The items were recovered, police said, and Moronta was found in the vicinity and arrested about 11:30 a.m.

He was to be arraigned Friday in First District Court, Hempstead.
