Cops: Freeport man charged in 3 burglaries

A Freeport man was arraigned on charges in three area burglaries after he left DNA evidence in one home -- a cigarette butt and an alcohol bottle, Nassau police said.

Keith Shippey, 24, of 131 Branch Ave., was held pending a $50,000 bond or $25,000 cash bail after being arraigned on three counts of second-degree burglary and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property -- the latter charge after police said they recovered a stolen Coach pocketbook and wallet inside his 2002 Dodge.

He broke into a Davison Avenue home on April 29, and when the residents returned, they found an alcohol bottle in the kitchen -- they don't drink -- and officers recovered a cigarette -- the residents don't smoke, police said.

Shippey was arrested after First Precinct officers spotted him late Tuesday near the intersection of South Bayview and Atlantic avenues, police said.

The evidence recovered from the Davison Avenue home tied Shippey to an April 19 burglary at a Noon Place home and one on Westend Avenue on Tuesday, police said.
