A Freeport man who filed false reports with police, telling them he was shot at, faces charges of tampering with physical evidence, Nassau County police said Wednesday.

Juan R. Rodriguez, 42, of 164 Pine St., told Freeport police on Jan. 31 that his wife and her boyfriend had threatened him with a rifle. Then, according to police, Rodriguez placed evidence -- shell casings from several guns -- at the scene of the fabricated shooting, near Pine Street and Taft Place.

He stated he was walking when "he observed his wife and her boyfriend pointing guns at him while yelling," police said.

Rodriguez told police that as he ran back home, the two began shooting at him, according to a news release.

He also told Freeport police that when he got back to his apartment, a man hiding near a trash container fired two shots at him, the release said.

On Jan. 31 and Feb. 2, Rodriguez "signed statements that he knew were false," police said.

He was arrested late Tuesday, police said, on four counts of tampering with physical evidence and two counts of making a false written statement.

Rodriguez was arraigned Wednesday and held on a bail of $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond.
