Cops: Freeport man stole money from bank account
A Freeport man who opened a business bank account was arrested Thursday after he took transferred some funds into his personal account, Nassau police said.
David A. Smith, 32, opened the account in the name of his business, Sports and Luxury Auto Group, on Feb. 3 and deposited a fraudulent $20,000 check, police said.
Two days later, he went to two bank branches and withdrew a total of $15,000 from the account, putting most of the money into his personal bank account and keeping the rest as cash, police said.
After being arrested at his home at 83 Ann Drive South, Smith was arraigned Thursday on third-degree grand larceny and released with the condition that he report to probation, court records show. He was represented by Legal Aid, which does not comment on cases.
The bank's total loss was more than $16,400, which included bank fees, police said.
