Cleanup crews are working into the night to contain a fuel spill caused when a tanker truck overturned early Wednesday in Cedarhurst, police said.

The accident occurred at 4:54 a.m. on Rockaway Turnpike near Burnside Avenue, Nassau County police said.

Fire officials said volunteers from Inwood and several other Five Towns fire departments were on the scene along with hazmat crews cleaning up fuel.

Early reports indicated as many as 8,000 gallons spilled onto the streets, police said.

The cleanup operation forced firefighters and police to cordon off streets in a two-block radius surrounding the accident, including heavily trafficked Nassau Expressway.

Police said residents were not evacuated and said there were no crash-related injuries.
