A Glen Head woman violated Leandra's Law Friday by driving drunk with two children in her Mercedes-Benz on the line of Roosevelt and Uniondale, New York State Police said.
Maria Digioia, 36, was arraigned Saturday on a felony count of driving while intoxicated at First District Court in Hempstead and is due back in court on Jan. 10.
Digioia was stopped about 9:45 p.m. on the Nassau Road exit of the Southern State Parkway because she did not have her headlights turned on, a state police news release said.
The trooper detected the "odor of an alcoholic beverage" and Digioia failed sobriety tests, the release said.
The two children -- a boy, 2, and a girl, 1 -- traveling in Digioia's car were released to a family member, police said.
A police spokesman did not immediately know the relationship between the children and Digioia.
Digioia also is charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and a traffic violation, police said.
Leandra's Law was passed in 2009 after the death of Leandra Rosado, 11, who was killed in an DWI accident after the minivan in which she was a passenger crashed on the West Side Highway in Manhattan.
