Police said they are searching for a gunman who robbed a Mobil gas station in Wantagh just before midnight Thursday, stealing cash and fleeing in a black-and-beige Ford Explorer.

No one was injured during the robbery, police said.

Nassau County police said the incident occurred at 11:50 p.m. Thursday at the station on Wantagh Avenue. The robber, armed with a black handgun, approached the station attendant, police said, and demanded money. He then opened the register, grabbed the cash and fled the scene, police said.

Police said the robber ran to Jerusalem Avenue, where he got into an "older model" black Ford Explorer with beige trim at the bottom. The sport utility vehicle then drove off, headed west on Jerusalem, police said.

The robber wore a gray hooded sweatshirt with white lettering on the front, gray sweatpants and something covering his face, police said. Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential, police said.
