Cops: Hempstead fire probed as suspicious

A Hempstead Village police officer spotted a burning house early Saturday and helped get all eight people inside it out safely, authorities said.
Officer Jack Guevrekian was on routine patrol when he saw the fire on Cornwall Lane at 1:26 a.m., Nassau police said.
No injuries were reported.
The fire, which started outside the rear of the residence, is being investigated as suspicious, police said.
Fifty firefighters from the Hempstead Fire Department fought the blaze. There was no immediate damage estimate.
