A stranger asked an 81-year-old man if he needed any yard work done at his South Hempstead home and then robbed the homeowner at gunpoint, police said.

The robbery took place at 1:20 p.m. Thursday at a home on Willow Street, Nassau County police said. The homeowner was not injured.

Police are searching for the robber, believed to be a man in his 40s, about 6-foot-2, with a mustache. Police said the robber wore a gray fleece zippered jacket, a dark-colored baseball cap and dark sunglasses.

After approaching the victim and asking if he needed any yard work, police said the robber grabbed the homeowner by the arm, flashed a black handgun and escorted the man into the house.

Once inside, police said the robber stole jewelry and cash, then fled the scene on foot.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the robbery to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
