The victim of a fatal stabbing in Hempstead on Wednesday has been identified as a man known by two names, Nassau police said.

Herzon Alvarado, 23, also called Jose Gutierrez, of Hempstead was stabbed during a fight shortly after 3 a.m. near Main Street and West Columbia Street, police said. Alvarado was stabbed in the torso, and the victim then staggered to 161 Main St., where he collapsed, police said.

He was taken to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, where he was pronounced dead at 3:41 a.m., police said.

Homicide detectives ask anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.

Alvarado had no identification on him when he was found, police said.

Nassau County homicide detectives spent Wednesday tracking down his correct name, said homicide Det. Lt. John Azzata.
