Police officers responding to a 911 call of shots fired in Hempstead early Friday found a homicide victim lying in the street who died moments later of his wounds.

The identity of the victim has not been released, pending notification of kin. Nassau County police said a suspect is being sought.

The shooting occurred near the intersection of Ingraham Street and Peters Avenue at 12:50 a.m. Hempstead police handled the initial 911 call.

It was not clear how many shots were fired -- or how many struck the victim.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the homicide to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
