Cops: Island Park man on parole arrested on rape charge

An Island Park man, released on parole in October after serving 21 years for attempted burglary, is being held without bail after his arraignment in Long Beach City Court on rape, kidnapping and assault charges, officials said Wednesday.
Police arrested Alphonso Barnes, 54, on Dec. 16 in Hempstead in connection with an attack on a woman in the early morning hours on Dec. 5. He also was charged with robbery, aggravated sexual abuse and criminal sexual act.
At about 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 5, Long Beach officers came upon the woman near West Olive and Magnolia streets in Long Beach and began investigating, police said.
The woman told police she was walking on West Olive Street when a man grabbed her from behind, forced her into a residential yard in the 100 block of West Olive and raped her, police said.
Police said evidence, including DNA evidence, was gathered at the crime scene.
According to state Department of Correctional Services records, Barnes first was incarcerated in 1973 on a robbery conviction, for which he served two years. Subsequently, he served two years for criminally negligent homicide and six years for attempted burglary, records show.
In October, he was released on parole after serving 21 years of a sentence of 6-years-to-life for attempted burglary.
Judge Roy Tepper remanded Barnes to the Nassau County Correctional Center in East Meadow.
