A driver stopped for a defective taillight on Sunrise Highway in Rockville Centre late Monday night was arrested after a loaded handgun was found in his car, police said.

Christopher A. Betty, 45, of 146 Madison Ave., Freeport, was arrested by Rockville Centre Police on charges of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle and what Nassau County police described as "multiple vehicle and traffic law violations."

He is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said Betty was driving eastbound on Sunrise when he was stopped for the taillight infraction at about 11:20 p.m.

He was arrested without incident, police said.
