Cops: Long Beach man had 'arsenal' of weapons, ammo

A 31-year-old Long Beach man is charged with 51 felony weapons-related counts after a huge seizure of assault weapons at his home, police said.

In a statement Monday, Long Beach Police Commissioner Michael Tangney called the stash of firearms, large-capacity ammunition clips and almost 5,000 rounds of ammo an "arsenal" -- and said the arrest was "a testament" to the department's commitment to keep illegal guns off the streets.

The arrest of Daniel Gobic, of 445 East Market St., came after police went to the house shortly after 6 p.m. Friday to investigate a disturbance call.

Police said Gobic, a construction worker, had tried to choke a woman during a dispute. The victim told officers that Gobic had weapons stashed in the house and let them in to investigate, police said.

Seized from the home were four assault weapons, four handguns, two shotguns, 38 large-capacity ammunition clips, more than 4,700 rounds of ammo and fireworks, police said.

Gobic could not be reached for comment Monday.

He was charged with criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation -- or choking in layman's terms.

Gobic did not have licenses for the firearms and also had weapons that are illegal to own in New York state, police said.

He was charged with three counts of second-degree criminal possession of weapon; 40 counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon; seven counts of criminal possession of a firearm; and one count of third-degree criminal sale of a firearm -- possession with intent to sell.

Gobic was not required to enter a plea during this stationhouse arraignment Saturday, and he was released after posting a $100,000 bond bail. His case was transferred to Nassau County Court, where his next appearance is scheduled for Nov. 6, police said.

Police said they believe Gobic purchased the assault weapons, ammo clips and handguns in Florida sometime around July.

"The follow-up investigation [of the initial disturbance call] led to the recovery of this arsenal of illegal weapons and ammunition feeding devices," Tangney said in a statement released Monday. "New York has very intricate and serious gun laws, which this defendant has violated many of."
