A Valley Stream man was arrested Monday on a weapons charge after he fired a gunshot into the air during a verbal dispute in front of his home, police said.

A 69-year-old witness saw Brandon J. Schmidt, 21, of 63 W. Valley Blvd., involved in an altercation with a 27-year-old male, "then pointed a black handgun into the air and fired one round," Nassau County police said in a Tuesday news release.

No injuries were reported, and a 9-millimeter shell casing was recovered at the scene, police said.

Schmidt fled in a 2008 Honda, and later surrendered to Fourth Squad detectives and was arrested at 10:10 a.m. on charges of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree criminal use of a firearm and second-degree reckless endangerment, police said.

He is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday in First District Court, Hempstead.
