A Hempstead man violated an order of protection when he entered the South Hempstead home of a 36-year-old woman as she and her 6-year-old slept Wednesday and attacked the woman, police said.

Mauricio Oliva, of 150 Washington St., entered the home and, when an argument ensued, he struck the woman "numerous times" before taking her cellphone and fleeing the scene, Nassau County police said. Police said the woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of cuts and bruises.

The child was not injured.

Police said officers located Oliva near Milburn Avenue and Harold Avenue not long after the incident was reported, but said Oliva initially provided police with a false name.

Police said he was in possession of the stolen phone.

An investigation "determined the victim had an order of protection" against the suspect, police said.

Oliva was charged with third-degree robbery, second-degree burglary, aggravated criminal contempt, fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, second-degree criminal impersonation, second-degree criminal contempt and with endangering the welfare of a child.

He is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
