Nassau County police are investigating the early Sunday shooting of a 20-year-old man in Hempstead that left the victim critically injured.

The victim was with a group of friends near 302 Main St.t at about 3 a.m. when someone approached him and began to shoot, police said. The victim tried to run but was hit in the neck.

He was taken to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition, police said.

The shooter fled in an unknown direction, officials said. No further details were available.

Police ask that anyone with information about the assault call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. Calls will remain confidential, police said.
