A man died after he was pulled from his burning car by passersby after a head-on collision in Bellmore Thursday morning, Nassau County police said.

Police said the man, 66, was driving a 2001 Toyota Camry west on Merrick Road near Soma Avenue at 6:39 a.m. when his car collided with another vehicle, driving east.

The Toyota burst into flames, and the man was pulled from the wreckage by witnesses to the crash, police said. He was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where he was pronounced dead. Police withheld his identity pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the other car, a 23-year-old woman, was taken to NUMC, where she was listed in stable condition, police said.

The crash caused all eastbound lanes of Merrick Road to be closed for several hours Thursday morning, police said.

Hours later, the street showed signs of the fire, with charred asphalt in the intersection. Debris from the vehicles was scattered on the ground.

Police are continuing their investigation, and ask witnesses to call 516-573-6700.
