Cops: Man dies in crash that shut Sunrise Hwy. in Merrick

A Freeport man was killed early Saturday when the car he was driving struck a guardrail and flipped over, Nassau police said.

John A. Dabney, 25, of Freeport, was driving a 2001 Nissan Altima west on Sunrise Highway at Lansdowne Avenue, police said, when the car hit the guardrail and then flipped over, ejecting him onto the eastbound lanes. He was taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 1 p.m., police said.

The crash investigation had closed multiple lanes of Sunrise Highway in both directions in Merrick for about 4 1/2 hours Saturday morning.

No one else was injured. The crash occurred about 4:50 a.m.

All eastbound lanes were closed about 5 a.m. and one westbound lane was closed as of 6:45 a.m. between Babylon Turnpike and Merrick Avenue, according to the state Department of Transportation website. The westbound lane reopened just before 8 a.m., the eastbound lanes just after 9:30 a.m.
