A Plainview man was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated after he caused a fiery wrong-way crash on the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway in Bethpage on Saturday morning, Nassau County police said.

John Derrico, 51, was driving his 2013 Ford south in the northbound lanes of the expressway near the Powell Avenue exit when it collided with a 2007 Volvo at 1:05 a.m. and careened into the center median, police said. The Volvo's driver, a 29-year-old man, was not injured, police said.

A Nassau police Highway Patrol Bureau officer rushed to the scene, saw flames coming from under the hood of Derrico's vehicle and helped get him out, police said.

Investigators determined Derrico had been drinking alcohol before the crash, police said. He was taken into custody and brought to a hospital for medical evaluation.

The charges filed against Derrico include reckless endangerment, driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. He is scheduled to be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
