A Westbury man has been charged with attempted murder after stabbing his former girlfriend on a Uniondale street Wednesday night despite an order of protection, Nassau County police said.

Detectives said that Alvin Smith, 45, of 728 Roman Ave., approached the woman about 10:15 p.m. as she walked on Nassau Road and stabbed her several times in the neck and shoulder area with a large knife that was recovered at the scene.

Smith was found a short time later on Hill Street and arrested by First Precinct officers.

The woman was taken to a hospital to be treated.

Police said the woman has an order of protection against Smith.

Smith is charged with second-degree attempted murder, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree criminal contempt and aggravated criminal contempt.

He was arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead and ordered held without bail. The name of his attorney was not immediately available.

Smith's criminal history includes convictions on charges that include criminal possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, attempted assault and attempted forgery, records show.
