Nassau police found an unconscious man and young girl along with an unidentified white powder in a car parked at a Lawrence shopping center Monday morning.
Authorities said the man, 45, and the girl, 2, remained hospitalized in critical condition Monday night.
Officers dispatched to the Central Avenue scene at 10:40 a.m. found the two in a late-model silver Toyota Venza hatchback parked behind an Amazing Savings store, authorities said.
Hazmat, emergency service and crime scene units followed after the "powdery substance" was found, and police cordoned off entrances to the parking lot.
Mohammed Alam, a manager at Amazing Savings, said he arrived about 9:45 a.m. and didn't see anything out of the ordinary.
About an hour later, he said he saw ambulances and police in the parking lot immediately behind his store.
"They blocked the whole section," he said.
The store remained open as usual, but he said customers asked all day about the police activity behind the store.
"Everyone wants to know what happened," he said.
By 9 Monday night, police said, the special units had left the scene.
Police impounded the car but did not release the names of the two hospitalized victims.
The white powder had not been identified.
