A man seriously injured Thursday on the north Long Island Expressway service road in Roslyn Heights was a Good Samaritan who had stopped to assist the victim of a previous accident, police said.
The 47-year-old man from Babylon, whose identity wasn't released, was initially said to have been killed. Nassau County police later said he was revived at the scene and taken to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, where he was in serious condition Friday.
Police said a chain-reaction series of incidents began when a 2000 Honda driven by a 49-year-old Commack man swerved to avoid debris in the road, struck a tree alongside the service road and overturned just before 6 a.m.
The Good Samaritan, driving a truck, then came upon the scene, police said, and got out of his vehicle to help the driver of the overturned Honda.
As the Babylon man was doing that, a third vehicle, a 1993 Chevy driven by a 43-year-old Greenvale man, struck the 47-year-old near the intersection of Roslyn Road. That driver remained at the scene.
The driver of the overturned vehicle was taken to a hospital for observation and was later released, police said.
The driver from Greenvale wasn't injured.
Police said no one was charged in the accident.
