A man wearing football equipment tried to rob a Burger King in Meadowmere Thursday night, then chased down two employees who fled and called police, police said.

The man walked into the fast food restaurant on Rockaway Turnpike at about 10:20 p.m. wearing padded football shorts and carrying shoulder pads, displayed what Nassau County police said appeared to be a black and silver revolver - and herded employees into an office.

Police said the robber then demanded keys to the safe and that employees open the cash registers.

The employees told him they didn't have the safe keys. The bandit then noticed two employees had fled the store and raced out onto Rockaway Turnpike in pursuit. He attempted to wrest a cell phone from one of them, police said, then fled.

Police are now searching for the suspect, who they said is about 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds and was last seen wearing a black do-rag, black football shorts with pads, a black long-sleeved pullover shirt, a red duffel bag, red football shoulder pads and knee-high white socks.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential, police said.
