A Hempstead man was arrested after he punched a woman in the face and fired a handgun in the hallway of a building Tuesday morning, police said.

Charles Watts, 18, of 23 Linden Place., was charged with reckless endangerment, assault and possession of a dangerous weapon.

During an altercation with a woman at his apartment complex shortly after 10 a.m., Watts punched her in the face, causing a contusion under her right eye, Nassau police said. The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Watts then obtained a handgun from someone across the street at 29 Linden Place and opened fire there an undetermined number of times before returning to his complex, police said.

He was arrested a short time later without further incident, police said.

Watts was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court, Hempstead.
