A robbery victim fought off his gun-wielding attacker Wednesday night in Freeport, prompting the suspect to bite the victim before running off, Nassau County police said.

The victim, a 53-year-old man, was walking west on Archer Street at about 7:15 p.m. when he was approached by another man, asking for a light.

The man then brandished a silver handgun and grabbed a gold chain from the victim's neck.

Police said the suspect then reached for the victim's pockets, and the victim knocked the gun to the ground as a struggle ensued.

As the two men struggled, the suspect bit the victim on the hand, causing a laceration, police said.

The suspect fled, with the gun, north on Main Street. Police said the victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477. All calls will be kept confidential.
