Cops: Man shot in Glen Cove social club

A 25-year-old man was shot and critically wounded Thursday night after a dispute at a private Glen Cove social club, police said.

Ledio Spahija of Glen Cove sustained a gunshot wound to the neck, police said, and underwent surgery for his wound at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola. Although listed in "critical condition," Glen Cove police said Spahija has a "decent prognosis for recovery."

The gunman left the scene in a car right after the shooting, police said, and was still being sought by authorities Friday, but the driver of the getaway car was apprehended and arrested.

Glen Cove Police Lt. Thomas Fitzpatrick said the driver, Agostino Sorace, 32, of Glen Cove, was charged with attempted murder for allegedly acting "in consort" with the shooter.

An altercation took place early Thursday evening at the social club at 248 Glen St., between Spahija and the man being sought, Glen Cove police said. That man left the club briefly, but returned by car and shot Spahija outside the club, Fitzpatrick said.

Spahija, a carpenter; Sorace, who worked at the club; and the shooter, whose identity was not released by authorities, were all acquaintances, prior to the dispute, police said.

Sorace was arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead, Friday, and ordered held on a bail of $1 million cash, or $2 million bond.
