A 20-year-old Westbury man was arrested early Sunday on charges he assaulted two men, stabbing one in the head, then stabbed himself to make it appear that he had been assaulted by one of his victims, Nassau County police said.

Fourth Squad detectives charged John McKenna, of Land Lane, with second-degree assault and third-degree possession of a dangerous weapon. The charges stemmed from a fight at a party in Oceanside about 1:20 a.m. Sunday.

Police said McKenna got into a fight with two men at the party on Harold Street. When one man attempted to break up the fight, McKenna stabbed the man in the head and the leg with a pocketknife. Both victims were taken to a hospital for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries.

During their investigation, police learned that McKenna stabbed himself in the abdomen to "make it appear that he himself was assaulted," according to a police statement.

Police took McKenna to a hospital and he was awaiting arraignment Sunday.
